I started my worm farm about a month or so ago and I got my worms out in my own yard. One harvest I got about 300 and today I got another 370 or so. Then whenever I plant something new I will find a few in the ground and add them or after it rains and they surface. I have shown my little neighbor boy who is 4 yrs old and he is very interested in what I am doing. Today he wanted to show another neighbor friend of his one of the worms, so asked me to put a glove on him so he could take it over to show her as he didn't want it in his bare hand :) It is a neat hobby. Mine is in an old compost bin I had that never produced compost as didn't have enough sun in my yard....so worms love it...as it is moist, dark with lots of scraps from our table.

I think that having a worm as a pet is a great idea, but when I go to Amercia, I am pretty sure I will get a worm behind my mom or any other little animal, lool

My silly boyfriend thinks I'm too messy to get a worm bin, so I think it will be a compost tumbler for me. I wish I could get some worms, though, especially since a compost tumbler is more complicated to make homemade. This means I'll probably have to shell out a big chunk of cash to get one. Oh well. It will be worth it when I have lots of amazing soil to put on my garden net summer.

I did exactly this a couple months back with my three year old. It actually diverted the whole puppy discussion. I got her excited by reading some of the above mentioned books then I asked her if she wanted to get some worms. She loves to help feeding them.
