Living as commercial-free as we possibly can, my six-year-old daughter didn’t really understand what a slogan was when I explained it to her. She was stumped at writing one; however, she is just learning about poetry in first grade. Sure, I have read to her Langston Hughes and Shel Silverstein, but I don’t think that she has ever written a poem before. This is her very first poem, and she wrote it without any assistance from me (other than dictating it for me to write).

My 5 year old daughter Nevaeh says “We should be respectful to the earth and take care of it. The earth is good to us and it is a great place to live.
My 7 yr old sang this song to me that she learned from her Jewish school:
“Let’s plant a tree. Oh let’s water it, oh let’s water it. Trees are blowing in the wind, whoosh! Look at the leaves, the leaves are so much bigger now. Look at the trunk. Because it’s T’Bishvat. ”
Then she said, “People are cutting down too many woods and trees, and endangering habitats. And quite recently, there was a forest cut down near my house, and deer came up in our yard, which never happened before. They lost their home and have nowhere to go, so some people are endangering these creature’s lives and habitats.”
I asked, “Aren’t you glad to see the deer in your yard?”
She said, “Well it depends on how the deer feel about it.”
