Such an interesting post--just love the historical perspective from your parent's generation. It's great that your elders really practiced what they preached and you are able to carry on their practices well into the next generations and also enlighten your readers.

I also share a deep respect for our earth, but I admit I'm not as savvy as you when it comes to practicing ways to save the environment (but I'm learning!). I do however, share this great appreciation for our earth, our land, especially since our land keeps diminishing here due to over-development.

Not only was I "not an altruistic child," I was a flat-out skeptical child--and I grew up in a climate of complete late-80's excess.
I HAVE had to eco-learn as I've gone along as a mom--an evolving series of shades of green, and a big learning curve.
I thought it was very interesting what you said about being questioned (even casually by a friend) on your authority to write about this (ha--the perennial question facing every blogger). Want to be questioned? Especially about your authenticity and intent?--try being a mom wearing green training wheels publicly! Such a sad backlash and inherent suspicion of something positive. True, the green trend is taken for profit (like the people who slap an organic label on baby clothes as an excuse to charge a fortune. But I'm still trying.
As a former Kindergarten teacher and now SAHM--I am most comfortable "in the classroom!"
Thanks! I just stumbled on you--looking forward to seeing more.

I totally agree with you. Being green is just about common sense, having respect for the natural world and not buying into a consumerist culture. You don't have to buy a Prius to be an environmentalist.

Great post! The home is definitely a classroom. My parents were excellent teachers to me. I only hope I can be as good of a teacher to my son as my parents were to me. I definitely need to do a better job of setting an example on pure consumption to my child.
