GirlMogul Eco-Tee Giveaway: Create A Meaningful Message!
Future Marine Biologist? Future Environmental Engineer? Future Eco-Savior? Earth Warrior? EcoKid? Planet Patrol? Green Teen? Captain Crunch? ECP readers and Idea hamsters rev your brainpower to gear up for a FREE baby “Treehugger” onesie/tee!
These fun GirlMogul.com tees are a refreshing alternative to the rampant retail ‘pink think’ and “So Sexy So Soon” flash-n-trash that’s predominant in Packaging Girlhood as of late.
GirlMogul’s aspirational identity-wear offers positive personas that are Shaping Youth in favorable ways… I’m sold!
“We believe in encouraging girls’ dreams. You won’t find any princess messages here; just positive, encouraging messages…Future Leader of the Free World, Future CEO, Future Zoologist, Future Brain Surgeon”…
Quite a refreshing change from the snarky tidbits of consumerist tripe with the ‘shop ‘til you drop’ mentality I’ve come across with back to school shopping lately, eh?! Seems like they could use a few more eco-focused nudges toward going green, so I contacted founder Andrea Stein to pitch her the idea of encouraging ECP readers to create the phrase THEY’D most like to see on a tee-shirt…Here’s our mini-interview:

ECP: Are your products ‘eco-friendly?’ (organic cottons, dyes?)
Girl Mogul: We do have a tree hugger t-shirt and some products to encourage an interest in nature and the environment – and are always looking for more. Right now we’re looking into using organic cotton and dye, but we’re not there yet. It’s still tough to find the most flattering styles in organics, though we DO try to source apparel from the US and we manufacture our final product in the US. We also keep inventory low – which helps keep our overall “footprint” smaller.
ECP: Where do you feel we’re headed as a retail/culture? Do girls identify with your eco and positive ‘branding’ messages or is it an alternative/indie/’crunchy’ crowd?
Girl Mogul: Right now parents are identifying with the message. Young women (college and twenties) also identify with it. I have gotten a lot of kudos from home-schooling moms, who appreciate the message because it is counter to the Girls Gone Wild culture, and eco moms because it inspires girls to get outdoors, career path or otherwise.
I also get a lot of comments from Dads who are happy to see something besides a tiara for their daughters to play with! That being said, I think that there is still a polarity – I get a lot of “I like what you’re doing…” but not everyone who says that buys the t-shirts, so I don’t know if everyone is as ready for it as they claim!
ECP: Would you consider doing a ‘green garment’ type of ‘Threadless’ style contest to come up with more eco-slogans or maybe give away some tees to ECP readers’ top picks?
Girl Mogul: Sure! We’ll give a Treehugger shirt (or any one you want!) to the top slogan picked, whether we end up using it or not. Just leave ideas in the comment section…we’re always open to fresh, new concepts…
Hear that ‘future copywriters and fashionistas?’ Toss in your quotes, concepts and slogans for tees to join in the ECP freebie fun. (For more with GirlMogul’s Andrea Stein, the full/lengthier interview will be on Shaping Youth in the EcoKids category next week) Hat tip to You’re Amazing author Claire Mysko for pointing out this great site to me, and to Cool Mom Picks who gave it well-deserved accolades!
Meanwhile, here are a few resources to make your back to school shopping experience as green as can be! (p.s. Speaking of green messages: Anyone supplying teachers with ‘magic’ rainbow crayons melting broken ones to kick off the recycling precedent for the school year? Makes a great get acquainted gift!)

Amy R., I’m checking back in and seeing that still not much being churned out for contest input…we’ll be carrying this over to Shaping Youth and linking to this post for our theme week of ‘all things girl’ in early Nov., but I realize I didn’t put an ‘end date’ on the contest?! I thought I’d make it 12-1-2008 so that you can give it to someone for a holiday gift!
So far you’re in the lead, and frankly, I have a feeling you might be ‘it’!! So if you come up with more on the Shaping Youth site when I run it there, I’ll toss in a copy of the book ‘Packaging Girlhood’ written by our nonprofit’s advisory board members, Dr. Sharon Lamb & Dr. Lyn Mikel Brown!
