Green Gear for Dads: Stylish Recycled and Repurposed Diaper Bags

“Oooh… Another floral print diaper bag… with matching pastel changing pad. Just what I wanted!”

Parents need gear.

Diapers, food, toys, changes of clothing, water, wipes - it’s all got to go with you.

Everywhere.

Most baby gear and diaper bags are styled with a mom’s taste in mind, not a dad’s. After recently witnessing some new dads sheepishly carrying cutesy baby bags, I thought I’d share a selection of cool green bags with you. Every one of these is stylish and eco-friendly, made from either repurposed or recycled materials.

Alchemy Goods Messenger Bag

Alchemy Goods messenger bag, at right, is made from recycled inner tubes, and features a heavy-duty strap made from recycled seatbelts. Internal pockets abound, and a key clip and zippered pocket keep your valuables safe. Did I mention it’s waterproof as well? An awesome bag from a conscious company. Priced at $168.

The Fellini Pannolini messenger bag is produced in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in a fair-trade partnership with Three Stone Steps. They are made from repurposed outdoor mosquito netting, and are lined with repurposed industrial waterproof tarp. Pannolini means diaper, and this earth-friendly satchel could be your next hip diaper bag for only $75.

Osprey Packs ElroyOsprey Packs ReSource Series: Elroy Made from 100% recycled PET fabric, from soda bottles, these bags contain 70% total recycled materials. Buckles are reground from buckle scrap, the webbing and binding tape are recycled, and the mesh and pockets are made with recycled materials. With a padded laptop sleeve, a cell phone pocket, and a zippered organizer pocket, this bag’s probably more ready than you are. Sporty, green, what more do you need? Priced at $99.

Rawganique has a stylish collection of Ecolution hemp courier bags from certified organic European hemp. Prices start at $62.

Recycled tractor tubes make the messenger bag from Passchal a green choice, with 20 tons of inner tubes recycled so far by Passchal.  At $235, it’s not an impulse buy for most of us, but hey, Christmas is coming… This is a sweet bag. Put it on your wishlist.

Bentley Messenger Bag

English Retreads’ Bentley messenger bags are handcrafted in Boulder, Colorado, from (you guessed it) recycled truck inner tubes. They have a seatbelt strap, a handle on top, and come in any color you want, as long as it’s black. The large, pictured, sells for $169.

  1. Wow–these are all very cool bags–thanks for the legwork!
As a Mom, I would say my tastes run much more to these bags than to the floral matchy-mathchies (I was always on the lookout for additions to my entirely black and grey maternity wardrobe), but I HAVE always wondered (and heaven forbid I gender-type, here): If men wanted a print on things, what would that be?…
    Fun to ponder.
I wonder if the recycled truck tire/Bentley messenger bag (my absolute fave here) still smells of the open road, and instills in a baby the unconscious yearning for future travel?
    Thanks!–

  2. Great post. My husband hates it when I tell him to take the diaper bag with him. Even though mine is black and was meant for books he still thinks of it as a mom bag.

  3. Knowing that these are green .. I think I would make an exception to carrying them with me.

  4. We ended up going with a backpack as a diaper bag. A standard, every day backpack. Doesn’t look like a diaper bag at all. No special bag required. Just look for one with enough pockets/compartments for your needs.
