You make some very good and important suggestions here Derek.I hope thay social media can significantly help those casues which you mention. We at Side Street Studio have been supporting local artists since 1984. Over 300 (&2000 pages of their work on our web). So could not agree more. Very good luck!

Derek, Thank You for your educational piece and recommendation for Heifer International. I am an Area Volunteer Coordinator for Heifer in the Midwest. It's always nice to have help letting people know about the wonderful results you achieve with only a small gift to Heifer. The "Passing on the Gift" concept makes your gift just keep on giving. I have a fundraising webpage within Heifer's website under my name, Barb Oakes. I have proposed the concept of feeding an "Unseen Guest With an Empty Bowl" who sits at your table with you each day. I wish everyone who makes a contribution to Heifer could experience the gratitude I have witnessed when I have been able to visit families who were helped by the gift of a Heifer animal, or bees, seeds or trees. It is truly amazing!

My URL is http://heifer.kintera.org/faf/r.asp?t=4&i=178641&u=178641-76213908&e=2054051292 if someone wants to donate online to my Heifer Team. (I don't know how to imbed that address with a link. But I'm sure you do) Thanks again, Barb

That's a good list, Derek! There is a group of bloggers putting together a fundraiser for Heifer - http://wanderlustandlipstick.com/about-beth/passports-with-purpose/

Of course, the World Wildlife Fund and the National Geographic Society are near-and-dear to my heart.
