Buy a blu ray player (the price is dropping drastically!) without the game console.

Then get a Wii!!! Love Wii.

We have fun with an old Atari 2600 bought off eBay. Cheaper games and very much used rather than new. My kids are young and sometimes struggle with the controls, but so far they haven't complained about the graphics.

I like that you are not opposed to kids' technology, but keep it at a comfortable distance (grannie's house). I've heard a lot of my kids' friends talk about SimAnimals and they are loving the idea of creating their own ecosystems -- it's a good way for them to do "hands-on" learning without venturing off into the wild. Thanks for testing this stuff out for other moms to make better gaming decisions!
