What's on your Toilet: Recycling in the Bathroom

by Jamie Ervin on December 9, 2008

Have you ever noticed that things you would normally recycle may not get recycled in the bathroom? Most people simply have a small trash can in the potty and toss everything in.

Not in my house. We keep a small basket on the back of each toilet. In it we store things like extra rolls of Seventh Generation or Sunrise recycled toilet paper. I also toss in my waiting to be recycled preserve razor handles, toothbrushes and packaging. When a roll of tissue runs out, the empty cardboard roll goes into the basket.

Then once a week or so, I can simply empty the basket into the recycling bins (or drop in the mail to preserve).

Our bathroom is relatively large and ends up collecting a lot of junk mail, the stuff I take out of my day bag and leftover wrapping scraps. Because of this, I’ve recently added a bulk size cracker box (empty) to the floor behind the door. In this I toss used prescription bottles, receipts, toothpaste and soap boxes, etc… My husband finds the cracker box slightly funny, but hey it works. Eventually I might upgrade to a larger basket in that area as well.

This concept also works beautifully in the nursery, children’s bedroom, home office or just about any other room in your house. Take a look around your house to see where you can improve your recycling. Then grab a basket at your local second hand store and get to it.

I keep a small basket on the back of our toilet as well for the same purpose. Works great!
