Kitschy Christmas Record Albums into Nifty Festive Sewing Cards: A Tutorial

Record album cover sewing cardsIn my house, idle hands seriously do perform the devil’s business–if the devil’s business includes trashing the house, squabbling with sisters, and whining for treats, that is. Therefore, cheap as I am, my girls and I often do productive little projects together; this one is a set of sewing cards made from kitschy old vinyl record album covers. Follow along and at the end you can have yourself a merry little five minutes of peace wherein the kids are busily sewing and not griping. (NOTE: This project is very similar to the kitschy Christmas record album cover ornaments project–if you’re making one, then make both!)

Cut apart your record album coverYou will need: kitschy Christmas record album covers; sturdy scissors; perhaps some pretty scrapbook or wrapping paper and glue; a hole punch; yarn or shoelaces; tape

1. Choose a cardboard record album cover with a festive image, and cut apart the front and back.

2. If the flipside of the image you want is stained or ugly, you can spray mount or glue pretty scrapbook or wrapping paper onto the back, but if it’s just plain cardboard–cardboard is cool, right?

Sewing the cards3. Cut out your image, leaving enough room all around for you to punch some holes without ruining the picture. You can use a cookie cutter or other cutting template, or just freehand it.

4. Punch holes in your image wherever you want your kiddo to be able to sew. Hint: for an easier experience, use a larger hole punch; for a bigger challenge to fine motor skills, use a smaller punch.

5. Snip off a long piece of yarn or shoelace. One at least one end, wrap a tiny piece of tape securely around the end to create a firm “needle” for sewing. Either knot the other end or stick on another tape needle. Make sure your needle and yarn/shoelace will fit through the sewing holes on your image.

6. Your work is done–pass it off the to the seamsters and seamstresses of the next generation.

What cool holiday projects do you do with your kiddos?
