Learning to Sew? I Like These Easy (Free!) Kids’ Sewing Patterns

Sewing with BurdastyleThe holiday season is AWESOME for learning a new skill, especially sewing. Maybe somebody gives you a sewing machine for Christmas. Maybe somebody you can take advantage of gets one. Either way, sewing for kids is easy (they’re such straight little noodles that fitting is a breeze), quick (kids are little, and so is their stuff), forgiving (kids? They look good in ANYTHING), and inspirational (Oh, and kids? They love stuff).

One of my favorite places for sewing is Burdastyle, an open-source, copyright-free community of people who love to create and use sewing patterns. Out of their entire site, here are my favorite of their easy-peasy freesie patterns for kids:

  • Daisy–Your basic bib, this is flat-out one of the easiest sewing projects there is, but with so much scope for imagination (says Anne), with an infinite allowance of pretty fabrics and DIY embellishments.
  • Easy Beanie–With so much novelty fleece in the world, both new and thrifted, there isn’t a weirdo love your kid could have (camouflage? kittens wearing galoshes?) that you couldn’t sew them out of fleece. Bonus points: The generous sizing info in this pattern will allow you to make yourself a matching beanie.
  • Gigi Giraf–When you sew a stuffed toy, you’re learning a lot about 3-D design, and this is a basic pattern to begin with. Hint: You can make this baby as big as you can dream.
  • Nikkishell’s Baby Pajamas–A painless intro to sewing clothing, the elastic-waist pants are forgiving and the kimono top allows for any closure you’d like, allowing you to practice with inserting buttons, snaps, Velcro, or ties. Mental note: When my youngest babe was in the NICU, I was allowed to dress her in her own clothing ONLY if it had a kimono top. Want to know how much I’d have liked to have had some handmade kimono tops donated to the NICU for us? I’d have liked that a lot.
  • Basic Child’s Shirt–This is the least easy of this set, but the beauty of the basic shirt pattern is its versatility–boys, girls, long sleeves, short sleeves, dress-up, dress-down…it’s your blank canvas.

Still sewing? I made another list of easy-peasy grown-up projects over at Crafting a Green World.

What’s the awesomest thing you’ve ever seen sewn for a kid?
