Captain Planet And The Planeteers Are Back To Save The Earth

Back in the early 90’s, Ted Turner created the world’s first animated eco-superhero Captain Planet to entertain viewers and increase younger kids’ awareness of environmental hazards. After a decade of hibernation, he is back to save the Earth from pollution, global warming and eco-villains.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers, an animated environmentalist television program, was considered to be “edutainment.” The series advocated the United Nations as an organization, and the concepts of globalism, multiculturalism and environmentalism.

The series had an all-star voice cast, including Elizabeth Taylor, James Coburn, Martin Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, Meg Ryan, Sting, Jeff Goldblum, Neil Patrick Harris, Tim Curry, Helen Hunt and more.

Now, when we need Captain Planet more than ever, he is back with the release of 20 classic episodes as part of a Web-only series on Mother Nature Network (www.MNN.com), an Earth-first Web site with environmental news, insights and expert contributors. Captain Planet and the Planeteers will once again fight eco-threats and save the Earth from pollution, global warming and eco-villains.

The first episode, A Hero For the Earth, launched yesterday. The episode introduces Gaia, the spirit of Earth (played by Whoopi Goldberg) who presents magic rings to five special young Planeteers that collectively battle the evil Hoggish Greedly (played by Ed Asner), whose oil rig operation is jeopardizing the coastline.

Not seen in over a decade, Captain Planet has a large global following with more than 176,000 fans on Facebook. Now with President Obama’s focus on the environment and education, what better time for new, young green kids to be introduced to Captain Planet’s eco-lessons and old fans to enjoy the eco-hero they knew and loved!

MNN is promoting Captain Planet as “the green mullet is back” which cracks me up because I never even noticed the ‘do’ atop his cartoon head!
