As a parent, I do my best to give my child healthy food at home. But I also want the government to do more to make sure kids have healthy choices at school. More vegetarian options would help fight childhood obesity and diabetes. When Congress renews the Child Nutrition Act it must encourage schools to serve healthier meals. Low-fat, cholesterol-free vegetarian foods need to be more affordable, and schools that serve nutritious foods (fruits, vegetables, vegetarian options) should receive additional funding. There’s a group that’s collecting signatures to try to get vegetarian options in school lunches. It’s online at www.HealthySchoolLunches.org.

I do hope that if the standards are updated, they don't go overboard and wind up prohibiting fundraising bake sales. That's what's happened in some places that have banned the sale of junk food in schools. Kids are getting fat because they're eating junk day in and day out, not because of the occasional purchase of a cupcake from a booster club sale.

Music as Message created a superhero, Hearty, to teach children about eating right and exercising ... complete with music, lesson plans and interactive activities. Check out http://www.musicasmessage.com/cast.html. We are working on getting the program into schools across the country. Any suggestions are welcomed. Any info on grants available would be appreciated.

Kimberly, I'm with you on that. I hope it's the next step. There are some budding 'farm to school' programs, but those are the exception, rather than the rule.

The foods provided by the feds are junk foods. Honesty the snacks that are available are probably better for the kids than the entrees. Disgusting pizza with oil/grease for cheese, chicken nuggets, and low grade beef that makes me ill. Shredded iceburg lettuce is the vegetable on hamburger or taco days.

We need real locally grown fruit and vegetables on the menu.
