Here's another idea for visiting art museums with children. Start in the gift shop (!!!), and let each child choose 3 to 5 postcards of art paintings or objects she likes... and then embark on a treasure hunt to find them. They seem to absorb some of the art they pass, and by the time the 'treasure' is found, one and all are ready to call it a day.

I've developed a product based on making art history more fun and accessible - "250 Masterpieces in Western Painting" is a set of flashcards of the most famous paintings from five centuries of Western art. Each painting is reproduced and then explained by an art historian, making them fabulous to read before (and at) the art museum. Read more about them at www.TheMasterpieceCards.com, and get our "Summer Special" pricing through Labor Day.

Cheers!

Great post! I have found that many museums offer "backpacks" for kids that are geared toward helping children interpret the museum. Often filled with trinkets, maps, guide sheets, art projects & other goodies.
