Is Your Home Healthy?

Is your home healthy? Residents in Calgary, Alberta, are getting answers to that question from the Healthy Homes Calgary program offered by Clean Calgary Association.
The new residential service provides free home visits to Calgarians who are interested in “creating a healthy living environment, while reducing the home’s eco-footprint.” A staff member or trained volunteer shares tools and information city residents need to improve indoor air quality, energy and water efficiency, waste reduction and more.

Says the Clean Calgary Association:
“If you are like most people, your health and the health of your family are of primary importance. You try to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. You take your children to the doctor for regular checkups and work tirelessly to protect your family from harm and illness. You want to live in a home and neighborhood that is safe. But is your home a safe and healthy place to spend time?…Healthy Homes Calgary aims to help people understand the elements of a healthy home, helping them to take the necessary steps to create a safe and healthy living environment.”
What exactly is a “Healthy Home”? Clean Calgary Association says “A Healthy Home”:
- “Provides shelter and maintains a reasonable comfort level throughout the seasons.”
- “Does not adversely impact the health of the people residing in the home.”
- “Has systems that are optimized for efficiency, such that the previous two criteria are satisfied without wasting energy, water or creating undue harm to society.”
- “Is part of an integrated community that offers access to basic amenities, services and social supports.”
