In addition to the hair care products they also have created a non toxic bug repellant for the little ones. It’s Eco-Friendly Sunscreen and Natural Bug Repellent Season

smartshield eco-friendly sunscreen and natural bug repellentIt’s official, I got my first sunburn this weekend. It was only a light burn, but somehow I always forget the sunscreen during the first warm days of spring. Fortunately, I remembered to protect my children with SmartShield when we headed down to the river. One added bonus to this “serious sun protection” is it contains natural cedar bug repellent, which kept the “eye bugs” from swarming their faces.

SmartShield is an “eco-friendly” sunscreen and bug repellent combination, but it does not appear to be all natural, as there are some ingredients I do not recognize. I researched several of these ingredients on Skin Deep, as Smartshied itself has not been rated, and I discovered they contained a low to moderate hazard. The Environmental Working Group has done an extensive study on sunscreens and found that:

Our comprehensive scientific review indicates that 85% of 1,015 sunscreen products offer inadequate protection from the sun, or contain ingredients with significant safety concerns. Only 15% of the products on the market are both safe and effective, blocking both UVA and UVB radiation, remaining stable in sunlight, and containing few if any ingredients with significant known or suspected health hazards.

Greenpeace, Dove, Palm Oil, and the Destruction of the Rainforest

Get Adobe Flash player

Unilever, makers of Dove, has recently released a video aimed at promoting children’s self-esteem by illuminating how the beauty industry targets girl’s body images. The goal of the Dove Self Esteem Fund is to change “the current, narrow definition of beauty.”  As much as I agree with this goal, there is a downside. Unilever imports palm oil from Indonesia, where rainforests and tropical peatlands are destroyed.  Read the rest of this entry »

Dreamy Dream Baby Gift Set

idrm00007_lt.jpgI am a firm believer that nothing but the purest ingredients should go into and onto a baby’s body. The I Dream Baby line available from buygreen.com is natural and mostly organic, giving parents the peace of mind that they are not using products on their little ones that contain known carcinogens. You don’t have to be a baby to enjoy these products!

Wildcrafted and Handmade in Northern California

The I Dream Baby gift set comes with one bottle of baby wash and shampoo (7 oz.), one bottle of baby lotion (7 oz), and one bottle of baby oil (3 oz). The products contain a “thoughtful, soothing blend of organic, wildcrafted or sustainably grown therapeutic grade essential oils.” These blends smell so good, and the bottles are recyclable aluminum, which makes this plastic avoiding mother happy. Natural Means “Nothing” – What Does Everything Else Mean?

natural-labels.jpg

As I wrote about back in January, the word, “Natural” essentially means “nothing”, as far as the FDA is concerned.

The FDA (has) declined to issue a regulation that would define use of the word “natural” on food and household product packaging in the near future, stating: we’re not sure how high an issue it is for consumers.

Well actually, according to a Yankelovich study commissioned by Burt’s Bee’s, 78% of consumers believed that “natural” claims ARE regulated. So, of course they are not concerned…the government’s on the case, right?

Nope.

“… a company might make a product that really is natural, and label it as such,” says Daniel Fabricant, VP/scientific and regulatory affairs at the Natural Products Association, Washington, D.C., “or it could be made of nine synthetic ingredients, with just a little plant extract thrown in.”

Exercising for Two

baby-green.jpgExercise is a green approach to health care. Yes, a green pregnancy means making the most of what you take into your body, through what you eat, drink, and breathe, and also absorb through your skin, hair, and nails. But how you move your body is another powerful green way to make a difference.

There are many benefits of exercise during pregnancy, including improved physical conditioning, strength, flexibility, and stamina. It builds endurance for labor and delivery and a quicker postnatal recovery. By exercising regularly, you may be able to reduce some of the common discomforts of pregnancy such as backache, swelling, and constipation. Most of all, you feel great about yourself when you exercise.

How Exercise Can Help More Than Medication

Let’s take a look at the effects of exercise versus medications for two of the most important complications of pregnancy.

Gestational Diabetes

As many as one in eight women will develop gestational diabetes sometime during their pregnancies, increasing health risks for themselves and their babies. Researchers at the University of Southern California School of Medicine studied a group of women who had already developed gestational diabetes and who had fasting blood glucose levels high enough to require insulin. Half of the women in the study received the recommended insulin. The other half got personal trainers instead. The trainers supervised the women while they did simple twenty-minute stints on exercise bikes. The results were startling: moderate aerobic exercise was equally effective to insulin! Blood glucose levels were statistically the same in both groups. Read the rest of this entry »

Beautiful, Luxurious Bamboo Clothing for Baby

image001.jpgDoes you baby deserve luxuriously soft clothing? Of course he or she does! BabyBam Collection offers organic cotton and bamboo products for infants with little environmental impact. Seriously, I have never felt anything as soft as the fabric used by BabyBam Collection!

Bamboo is the perfect fiber for babies. It is naturally hypo-allergenic, anti-bacterial, and thermal regulating. Babies have a harder time adjusting to temperature changes than adults.

According to the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, “A baby’s body surface is about three times greater than an adult’s, compared to the weight of his/her body. Babies can lose heat rapidly, as much as four times more quickly than adults.” Bamboo fabric offers babies some protection, as it wicks away moisture and helps regulate an infant’s body temperature.

BabyBam Collection’s line of infant clothes is made from 70% Bamboo/30% Organic Cotton. No bleach or dye is used on the fabric, except for the silkscreen on the front, as well as the “tagless” silkscreen label, which is made with a low-impact dye. Of course, the company has values, which is one reason why I love eco-friendly businesses: Read the rest of this entry »
