Green Lunch Giveaway Winner!

by Jennifer Lance on October 15, 2009 · 0 comments

no lead, BPA, PVC, or phthalates.Thank you Citizenpup for sponsoring our Green Lunch Giveway, and congratulations to Sonya of Sanity is for Those Without Children (love the name!) for winning.  Sonya wrote, “My kids love edamame and lots of veggies!”  My kids love edamame too, and I promise to grow the beans in my garden next year. If you do buy edamame, shop carefully to avoid beans grown in China.  Many of the frozen organic varieties of edamame originate in China.

BPA Facts and Myths WAR

by Jennifer Lance on April 15, 2009 · 5 comments

tug of war over BPAEditor’s note: The following post was originally published on Green and Clean Mom in August 2008, but the information on BPA is still relevant and important to consider. “Green & Clean Mom can inspire you to try a little harder, be a catalyst for change and to offer you some new tips and news on how to be the green, sexy and sassy mom…I know you are!”

Okay, war sound harsh but it’s a battle of sorts. Is BPA safe or isn’t it? Is it a myth that BPA is harmful and the media is fooling us because we don’t have the facts?  Well, according to Mom Style News or Mom Myth Busters (same author), yes. If you follow me on twitter you might know, Friday there was a big twitter debate going on over this. The Good Human, Safe Mama, To Think and Nature Mom , twittered their opinion.

Here is it is folks, BPA might not kill you if your child drinks out of a sippy cup or has some canned food lined with BPA. Sure, I conceded to this. BPA is a chemical and the FDA and EPA has limits of safety so companies use this and then hide behind it, because they can. Companies that have gone with BPA free products have done so because of consumer demands. Why are consumers demanding this? Duh, because there are risks. Who’s most at risk? The fetus, infants and children are most at risk. Even the reports sited by Mom Style News don’t discount that, she just says they are minimal. Well, my son has a minimal risk of getting hit on our road when he crosses it because of the traffic statistics or what I observe. So I should let him just take that “minimal” risk. It’s just a possibility and not a fact! That’s how ridiculous this debate is!  Here are the facts that have led ME to know that choosing BPA FREE is the right thing to do and since Mom Style News is all about the facts and going by what the facts are and not just reading mommy blogs (which I love, support, read and rely on) here it is…

FACT: The government sources are basing their decisions and statements on assessments with hundreds of flaws and errors. The FDA has based it’s decision on two studies, funded by the plastics industry. [read the full article...]

green moms and dads on twitter[social_buttons]Do you know what twit, tweet, or tweeple means?  If so, then you are probably on Twitter!  What is Twitter?

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

Eco Child’s Play has a Twitter account, and although we have found many green moms and dads already, we would like to follow more!

Therefore, we have created the definitive list of green parents on Twitter to make it easier for our readers to find each other.

Of course, we have unintentionally omitted a few names, so we hope you will leave a comment with your Twitter details if you are not on our list.  Furthermore, we are hosting a contest for all of our new followers (details following the list).

Greenwashing

by Jennifer Lance on November 26, 2008 · 3 comments

What is greenwashing?Editor’s note: The following post was originally published on Green and Clean Mom. “Green & Clean Mom can inspire you to try a little harder, be a catalyst for change and to offer you some new tips and news on how to be the green, sexy and sassy mom…I know you are!”

Yesterday afternoon my phone rang, just as my daughter was waking up from her nap. A magazine reporter was on the line, we had a scheduled phone interview. Was it that time of day, already? Most of the questions were the usual interview questions about BPA, toxic products, mommy bloggers and my story of how I started going green and why. Then there was the question that stumped me.

“How do you deal with greenwashing?” [read the full article...]

Super Cool Parents Read Super Cool Baby

by Jennifer Lance on November 13, 2008 · 0 comments

Super Cool BabyWith the holidays approaching, I have begun looking at blogs focused on reviewing children’s products for gift ideas.  One blog I love is Super Cool Baby, which provides “news and reviews to make your baby super cool”!

Of course, I think a super cool baby is a green one. Although not devoted entirely to green products and news, Super Cool Baby does feature many eco-friendly products.

Here are a few of my recent favorites:

  • Bambino Grande Pull Sled is designed for kids six-months to four-years-old and can fit either two toddlers or a single older child. It is made with birch planks, hand carved willow hand rails, and stainless steel hardware.
  • Happy Tummi is an all natural remedy for colic as well as gas and general fussiness. It is an herbal pack that goes on the baby’s stomach. Aromatherapy and its warmth is what soothes the child. It is adjustable with Velcro, and it only needs to be placed in the microwave for 30 seconds before placing it on your baby. [read the full article...]

Last month, we shared with you a shocking UK report that claimed disposable diapers were better for the environment than cloth nappies, even though we couldn’t believe it and found the report did not consider all things enviro.

Today, the Grist’s Ask Umbra weighed on the subject with neutrality claiming cloth and disposable are on equal footing when it comes to environmental impact.

Involve Your Child in Your Organic Garden

by Jennifer Lance on May 14, 2008 · 5 comments

child with tomato plantsIt is gardening season across the Northern Hemisphere. My children’s interests wax and wane in the garden, but they’ve enjoyed the recent abundance of asparagus and seed planting. My daughter likes to harvest the asparagus, probably because we let her use a knife under close supervision, and my son loves to plant the seeds and dig holes. We are all anxiously awaiting the arrival of the strawberries!

Over the years of organic gardening with children, I have learned to relinquish some control to perfect rows, perfect spacing, etc. Now, I have added seed and plant selection to the list of gardening enjoyments I now share with my children. It all started when the seed catalogs started arriving at the end of winter. Both of my children took an active interest in the pictures, so I suggested they start circling varieties they wanted to grow. Now that we are planting, they have a vested interest in our efforts, and I believe this will carry over to trying new foods and healthy eating from our organic garden. [read the full article...]
