Does Your Furniture Contain Formaldehyde?

by Jennifer Lance on July 20, 2010 · 4 comments

way basics modular table setEditor’s note:  The following is a guest post by Way Basics.  In general, we don’t publish content written by companies, but we thought the message was important for our readers to consider, especially if your child’s room is filled with particle board or MDF furniture and play things.

With many of today’s consumers choosing to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not only are they choosing to further the “green” movement, but also are choosing to live a healthier lifestyle.

Nearly every day we are exposing ourselves to toxins that surface in products such as bookcases, end tables, and computer desks. The culprit:  formaldehyde. Considered a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), Formaldehyde is readily found in particle board and MDF and is used as a binding agent to allow the wood chips and fibers to adhere to each other.

Gwyneth Paltrow advises moms on losing weight

I gained a lot of weight during both of my pregnancies (55 pounds and 45 pounds).  I have never been overweight, and my midwives were very reassuring that there was nothing to be concerned about.  The weight was what my body and  my babies needed.

After my children were born, I had no trouble dropping all that weight. Of course, it didn’t happen overnight.  I ate healthy foods and walked a mile everyday. I breastfed for two years.  One of my favorite quotes from a mediocre pregnancy book was “Nine months up, nine months down”.  It was my mantra.  It took more like a year in my experience to lose all those extra pounds, but then my body returned to its pre-pregnancy state.

Kids exposed to toxic flame retardants at preschool

For 15 years, I  have taught in schools in the United States (eight years in preschool).  Before that, I was obviously a student.  Children spend a lot of time in daycare and early childhood educational facilities.  In fact, more of their waking hours may be spent at school than at home, especially if both parents work full time.  Considering how susceptible children are to toxic chemical exposure and the amount of time they spend in school, the results of a new UK study finding “classrooms are a significant source of exposure to flame retardants and polycholorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for children from 1 to 6-years-old” is alarming.

Toxic Chemical Lobby: Exclusive Leaked Footage!

by Healthy Child Healthy World on July 7, 2010 · 1 comment

cartoon_screenThe secret is out: the toxic chemicals industry is designing a PR campaign for survival! Bisphenol A in baby bottles, water bottles, and food cans. Formaldehyde in furniture. Phthalates in air fresheners, soft plastics, and fragrances. The manufacturers of these chemicals are not taking the push for regulation lying down (despite their public claims of support for safety). Don’t be duped!

CNN & EWG: Do Sunscreens Cause Cancer?

by Jennifer Lance on June 30, 2010 · 3 comments

Damned if you do; damned if you don’t.  Americans have been scared by the prospect of skin cancer into slathering sunscreen on their bodies anytime they leave the house.  Unfortunately, many of the ingredients in sunscreens are even more dangerous than overexposure to the sun itself, and some of them, even though natural, may cause cancer.  According to the latest Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) sunscreen report, only 39 sunscreens are safe.

“The best sunscreen is a hat and a shirt. No chemicals to absorb through the skin, no questions about whether they work.”

4 trips to the hospital in 5 days

I am an avid, natural healer; however, there are times in my life when I have been humbled, in dire need of, and thankful for western medicine. This past week has been one of those times, as a week long annoying sore throat turned into an abscess on my tonsil causing excruciating pain, inability to swallow, and began to constrict my airway.

My journey into the medical world began last Sunday. I had had an annoying sore throat for a week, then it evolved.  After 24 hours of excruciating pain swallowing and in my ear, I decided a I couldn’t wait to see the family doctor on Monday.  I drove the hour and half to the closest ER from my mountain home. This small hospital has a poor reputation, but the wait is short and I felt all I needed was some antibiotics. The doctor spent about three minutes with me. He looked in my ear, looked in my throat, wrote me a prescription for pain pills and antibiotics, and sent me on my way. He said I had an infection.
