Every wonder how the mystery fish sticks or tater tots ended up in your school’s lunch program: think politics, think lobbyists. $10 billion is spent each year on the National School Lunch Program, which is renewed every five years. According to the USDA:
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is the Nation’s second largest food and nutrition assistance program. In 2007, it operated in over 95,000 public and nonprofit private schools (grades K-12) and provided low-cost or free lunches to over 30 million children daily.

Sasha and Malia Obama have to be the cutest kids to live in the White House since Caroline Kennedy and John, Jr. Last night on “60 Minutes”, Michelle Obama was asked if the children would attend public school:
[Kroft] Did you seriously consider sending the girls to public school?
You know, we’re still in the process of figuring out that transition and what we have asked people to understand is that the decision that we make will be based on the best interests of the girls. We haven’t made that decision yet. We want that to be a personal process, and people have been really good about respecting that.
I do respect the Obama’s decision as parents to choose the best school for their girls, but most parents in the United States do not have this luxury. I am a public school teacher, and I strongly support public education as a necessity in a democracy. It is a personal decision of the Obama family where their children attend school, but politically, public school would be the best decision.

As would be expected, Iraqi children living in Jordanian camps report witnessing gruesome events related to the war. These sorts of trauma leave indelible marks on children’s social and emotional development. According to a World Vision report Trapped! The Disappearing Hopes of Iraqi Refugee Children, “43 per cent of children surveyed in Amman, Jordan witnessed violence in Iraq, and 39 per cent said they lost someone close through violence.”

Whether you vaccinate or not, use herbal medicine, etc., there are times when your child will need to see a doctor or visit an emergency room. If you are self-employed, your options for health insurance are very slim, especially if you have a child with a congenital heart defect like my son. He has been rejected on numerous occasions for private, individual health insurance, and without a state supported program for families above the poverty line, he would not be insured.
