So true! We had a river cleanup today with our students and I’ve never seen them so alive!

The Take a Child Outside campaign is a great way to share you nature experiences with others and pledge to take children outside. The website also has partner organizations all over the United States, so you can find one in your local area. The program is sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

No Child Left inside is a marvellous initiative that I fully support. I have written extensively on similar themes and am now completing an op-ed piece called “Kids Today” that hightlights the potential social catastrophe that could result from ignoring the emotional, physiological and psychological impacts of new technology on kids. As part of this article, I used the often quoted statistic that “A study found that young people could identify 1000 corporate logos but fewer that 10 plants or animals native to their backyards.” Unfortunately, try as I might, I cannot find this study. There are numerous references to it, but nowhere can I find the the actual research. Is this an urban myth, or do you have more information on the origins of these numbers?
Thanks.
