Easter Chicks: How to Give in a Socially Conscious Way

I’m all for everyone getting a set of backyard chickens. I love mine! It’s an easy step in sustainability. Plus, it’s great to see your kiddos literally play with their food, but in a more natural setting.

However, are you just getting those cute lil fuzzy birds for your children for a holiday? No coop, a little bread, and that’s all you need?

Not so much, folks. You can pick up chicks without putting their health in jeopardy.  And give yourself a big ol’ pat on the back while you do.

World Vision is a Christian charity organization that has their hand in the good works all over the world. The Chinese earthquake? They were there. Diamond conflicts? They help out there, too. “Precious in his sight”, they work to help children and their families.

Though it’s not up my alley religiously, I love that they practice what they preach.

I heard of World Vision from my hardcore baby sis’, who ran the Chicago Marathon and collected donations for the charity. Then last Christmas, other sisters gave each other livestock instead of more traditional gifts.

Goats in the Chicago ‘burbs?! Not quite.

If you want to buy chicks for Easter, buy them for someone who needs them. Hop on the World Vision site and you can easily purchase two chicks ($25) for a family in need.  The eggs will not only supplement their own family’s diet, but the extra (eggstra?) eggs can be sold for a bit of cash.

If you want something cute and fluffy in your child’s Easter basket, stick with the Peeps.

What, you don’t dig chicks? The World Vision catalog also offers goats, ducks, alpacas, and combo gifts.  You can even snag a fishing kit to “teach them how to fish and they’ll eat forever”.

Yep, I’ve given my family (dh’s included) animals for Christmas for years now . . . cows, goats, sheep, and most recently bees! It’s kind of a running ‘joke’ now, as everyone wonders what they’ll be getting each year, LOL!

We donate through Heiffer International, same premise though.
