Music To Love: A Pink Whale and A Very Tall Tree by Shana Barry

We are loving this album by Shana Barry.  A Pink Whale and A Very Tall Tree is a lovely collection of folk music for children.

The songs are about the island of Fof and the Fofers who inhabit it… the lyrics talk about all the wonderful things found in nature.

“…I eat blueberries as soon as I pick them, then I head to the raspberry bramble, pick enough for a pie then lie back in the grass…”

Let’s talk sustainability.  The album is available in MP3 for download or on CD which is printed in soy based ink, comes in recyclable paperboard cover WITHOUT plastic shrink wrap. Now, that’s responsible packaging.

In addition to the wonderful music, Shana has designed a fun art page where children can download coloring pages, paper dolls and other craft projects.  There is also an animated Pink Whale video to watch and downloadable song lyrics.  Shana says, “I like the idea of kids listening to the album with their parents or grandparents and all of them coloring together.  Or cutting out the paper dolls.  Or just singing along to the songs.”

One of my favorite things about this album is its ability to calm my children.  In addition to having a sensory challenged four year old, I care for a couple two year olds and an infant.  We first listened to the album in the car (right after getting it out of the PO Box).  Everyone was instantly soothed and calm.  That is a wonderful feat in our crazy, busy, go go world.  We’ve already developed the new tradition of putting the album on at nap time to help calm and soothe the crew (and Mommy too!).
