A few weeks ago, I wrote on Non-Toxic Kids about the roll out of a swine flu vaccine for this fall. I realized then I needed to learn a great deal more about this virus and the vaccine. As a teacher, I will be in direct contact with hundreds of kids and could bring this virus into my home. But I am also a minimalist when it comes to medicating my children.
I’ve been concerned as to what chemicals are in vaccines, especially mercury containing thimerosal. I do know this ingredient has been phased out of the flu vaccines in my area of Vermont.
Apparently, this vaccine will be similar to other flu vaccines in content. I have not heard anything about thimerosal in these new vaccines, but I will be asking my doctor about it.
Recently, there have been some news reports about the vaccine. In a call for people to test the vaccine, researchers were inundated with volunteers. Many people seem eager to get this vaccine as soon as possible. Most parents are supportive of in school swine flu shots as well.
What is particularly concerning is that pregnant women seem to be at a greater risk of health complications from swine flu. This population will thankfully be one of the first to receive vaccinations, and should seek treatment immediately if they think they are affected.
While I am anxious about the chemicals in everyday products including medications, I am more concerned about the health and welfare of my young children and students this fall with a potential massive swine flu epidemic. It seems everyday, there is more to follow with this story. I’m paying attention.

I agree that you need to be cautious here. This vaccine was fast-tracked and the studies are minimal and do not measure any long term effects. Most people who catch this flu do NOT die. I think our govt. is absolutely nuts to hold mandatory vaccination at our public schools with a vaccine that has not even been tested longer than 21 days. Can anyone say “overkill?!” Here is something I got off of a very helpful website http://www.pandemicflu.com. It read: These shots will probably be made in PER.C6 cells (human retina cells) and contain MF59, a potentially debilitating adjuvant. MF-59 is an oil-based adjuvant primarily composed of squalene.
All rats injected with squalene (oil) adjuvants developed a disease that left them crippled, dragging their paralyzed hindquarters across their cages. Injected squalene can cause severe arthritis (3 on scale of 4) and severe immune responses, such as autoimmune arthritis and lupus.
