I had my 13-year-old daughter try this product. She said it was not very strong in flavor, which was a bonus. Her biggest complain of kids’ toothpastes we are sent are that they are overly flavored to try and make them appealing.
[amazon_link id=”B004TR5GBI” target=”_blank” ]Coral Kids’ Toothpaste[/amazon_link] doesn’t have the mint flavor I crave in a toothpaste to make my breath feel fresher, even though it does contain some spearmint. When both of my children were young, they could not tolerate adult toothpaste due to the strong mint flavors. They complained it burned their mouths.
I love the ingredient list on this product! I think including herbs like goldenseal and echinacea are good for gum health. This toothpaste is sweetened with stevia. It also contains xylitol (don’t use on your dog’s teeth!), which is supposed to be better than fluoride at maintaining and strengthening tooth enamel. In fact, it has been called the “decay-preventive sweetener” by the California Dental Association.
How does xylitol prevent cavities?
Xylitol inhibits the growth of the bacteria that cause cavities. It does this because these bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) cannot utilize xylitol to grow. Over time with xylitol use, the quality of the bacteria in the mouth changes and fewer and fewer decay-causing bacteria survive on tooth surfaces. Less plaque forms and the level of acids attacking the tooth surface is lowered.
Studies show that Streptococcus mutans is passed from parents to their newborn children, thus beginning the growth of these decay- producing bacteria in the child. Regular use of xylitol by mothers has been demonstrated to significantly reduce this bacterial transmission, resulting in fewer cavities for the child.
The combined benefits of the herbs, xylitol, and coral minerals, this kids’ toothpaste seems very beneficial!
