I’ve been trying to support Blog Action Day 2008 on the blogs on which I write. This year’s topic is “Poverty” and this video I think is a sobering reminder that we parents can contribute to the fight by simply watching what we buy!

It’s important to distinguish between slavery and voluntary child labor. Slavery is indeed cruel and unjust. Voluntary child labor is not wrong by the very fact that it’s voluntary. In fact, it can help to reduce poverty by providing a source of income that might otherwise not exist. This distinction often gets lost in the discussion because of the emotional reaction members of advanced societies have toward children working.

for my part, i turn to sites like freerice (rice donation), kiva (microfinance), and goodsearch (donation per search), as ways to help alleviate poverty online. i also put up their banners on my blog. 🙂
