Another Urgent Health Alert: Toss The Keebler Cookies

Five adults have died with salmonella infection and Peanut Corp. of America (PCA) may be the cause of the outbreak.

Kudos to Kellogs for preemptively pulling their cookies from the shelves. Yeah, I said that, Kellogs, pimpmaster of all things packaged,  high fructose, genetically modified, partially hydrogenated, frankenfood. Yeah, they’re doing the right thing.

From the Washington Post:

Kellogg, of Battle Creek, Mich., said it hadn’t received any complaints or discovered any problems with the crackers, but took the action as a “precautionary measure” after one of its peanut paste suppliers, Peanut Corp. of America, announced a nationwide recall of peanut butter made in a Georgia plant.

The company is “removing product from retail store shelves and encouraging customers and consumers to hold and not eat these products until regulatory officials complete their investigation of PCA,” a news release on the Kellogg Co. Web site said late Wednesday.

“We are taking these voluntary actions out of an abundance of caution,” CEO David Mackay said in the news release.

The crackers are Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers, Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, and Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers.

In a press release, Peanut Corp reminds us that none of the affected peanut butters were sold directly to consumers. Before you feed your children that peanut butter cookie, give the manufacturer a call.

Better safe than sorry this week.

Things like this make me even happier that we only buy natural foods (and generally skip many prepared foods like peanut butter crackers… I mean, how hard is it to spread the pb myself?).

Scary. I’m glad they pulled the products before it became a HUGE issue.

I’m curious about the image accompanying this article. Does Kellogg own Kashi and Carr’s, too? Are TLC crackers also contaminated?

Why the photo of the Kashi crackers? If you’re including them in this allegation, you should definitely provide more information!

I am curious too about the picture. Are those crackers included in the recall?

Yes, that is a kellogs picture, they are not included in the recall, but today another 100 items have been added to the recall list.
