All of the products are dermatologist tested, recommended, and developed with herbal extracts from fennel, yarrow, melissa, mistletoe and chamomile

When I became a new mother, I knew better than to trust brands like Johnson & Johnson’s Baby products with their claims of “No more tears”.  I shopped at the health food store for what I assumed were safe products and took recommendations from friends. It was through a reader of this blog so many years ago that I learned my assumptions were wrong. What I thought was a natural, safe product was not and the root of the problems my son’s skin suffered.  It’s a fuzzy world when it comes to natural baby products…

[amazon_link id=”B001O2BZ9I” target=”_blank” ]Baby Sebamed [/amazon_link] is company committed to “naturally protect a baby’s delicate skin”.

Baby’s skin is delicate and prone to diaper rash, chafing or eczema from the harsh chemicals, fragrances, and dyes found in many baby products…Each product in the Sebamed Baby line is uniquely formulated to rebalance and maintain a healthy skin pH level of 5.5, helping to heal and protect your baby’s skin without the risk of dryness and irritation.
All of the products are dermatologist tested, recommended, and developed with herbal extracts from fennel, yarrow, melissa, mistletoe and chamomile to alleviate irritation and soothe the skin

We were sent three alkali-free products to try:

[amazon_link id=”B001O2BZ9I” target=”_blank” ]Sebamed Baby Cream Extra Soft[/amazon_link]

BABY SEBAMED BABY CREAM deposits a moisturizing and protective moisture layer on the skin, helping to prevent dryness throughout the day. The panthenol (Vitamin B5), allantoin and chamomile-enriched formula is designed to moisturize, protect and soothe irritated skin, including areas exposed to chafing. Furthermore, Vitamin E safeguards the skin against harmful environmental influences. Features a 42% lipid content to help protect baby’s skin all year round, especially from the drying effects of cold, dry winter air.
[amazon_link id=”B001OSY210″ target=”_blank” ]Sebamed Baby Wash – Extra Soft[/amazon_link]
BABY SEBAMED LIQUID BABY WASH gently cleanses a baby’s delicate skin with a no-tears formula that employs ultra-moisturizing ingredients to soothe the skin. This “extra soft” wash contains sugar tenside complex, an extremely mild cleansing agent, to protect the delicate skin again dryness. The squalane and allantoin-rich formula provides the lipid support and moisturization that a baby’s skin needs, resulting in softer, healthier skin.
[amazon_link id=”B003JE7SOK” target=”_blank” ]Sebamed Baby Lotion[/amazon_link]
BABY SEBAMED BABY LOTION contains a rapidly absorbing and non-greasy formula that combines a high concentration of moisturizing substances, such as glycerin and sorbitol, with a light 7% lipid compound to help preserve the natural moisture balance of a baby’s skin. Adds natural-based buffer substances, such as sodium citrate and sodium lactate, to the formulation to adjust pH to a desirable pH of 5.5.
When I read the list of ingredients, I am a bit concerned since there are many chemical sounding  names.  Also “KEEP OUT OF REACH OF YOUNG CHILDREN” always scares me. I  like to read an ingredient list that looks like something you can eat, not something you fear.
These products are free of  phthalates, “colorants, nitro-mochus compounds, formaldehyde, nitrosamines and dioxan”.  That’s good!
Made in Germany, I was struck by that typical baby product smell when trying them.   Ironically, it is that smell that is of greatest concern.  These product earned a hazard score of five out of ten by the Environmental Working Group. The fragrance ingredient received the highest score of eight!
Other HIGH concerns: Multiple, additive exposure sources, Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Miscellaneous, Occupational hazards; Other MODERATE concerns: Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive); Other LOW concerns: Enhanced skin absorption, Cancer, Data gaps,Ecotoxicology, Contamination concerns
Although I do think there are safer products on the market, and I do not feel assured when I read labels such as “hypoallergenic” and “dermatologist recommended”, these products are better than most commercially available baby skincare products.
Disclosure: The products described above were sent to us as free samples. Prior assurances as to the nature of the reviews, whether positive or negative, were not given. No financial payments were accepted in exchange for the reviews. The reviews reflect our honest, authentic opinions.
