Protect your Posts with Internet Security

Here at Eco Child’s Play we post a lot of reviews and information for items that you can purchase from online retailers. You can also share information about these products on social media sites like Facebook and Pinterest.

Unfortunately, as these social media sites become more popular, so do the threats to your online security increase.

It’s not too difficult for someone to post a link on Facebook or Twitter that leads to a suspicious webpage – a practice known as phishing. Another issue are the apps that access your account information; one of them could be a piece of malware that spams your friends list. A common issue, reported by Facecrooks, is a spam message through Facebook Messaging, that the sender of the message has been the victim of a crime and needs help from the recipient. The mark is then directed to click a link within the message, which takes them to a phishing website.

One way to combat these issues is to lock down your Facebook privacy settings as much as possible.

Adjusting Your Settings

There are several ways to protect your privacy and security on Facebook. From your Facebook account you would click on the gear in the upper right-hand corner and select Account Settings.

From this screen you can change your password and make adjustments to your security and privacy settings. You can also block specific users from this screen and select which apps have access to your profile.

  • If you have had the same password for more than six months, you should consider changing it under General Account Settings. Be sure to use a password that you can easily remember, but also uses special character, capital letters, and numbers.
  • Under security settings you should make sure that secure browsing is enabled, and if you log in from several different devices, you should activate login approvals and require a security code to access your account from an unknown browser.
  • Check your Active Sessions, under Security, and remove any sessions that you do not recognize or that have been active for more than 72 hours.
  • Go to privacy and set your future posts to Friends only. You can also limit old posts so that they only show up as friends only.
  • Turn off Search engine linking to your timeline, and only allow friends to look you up based on your email address or phone number.
  • Go the Apps section and delete apps that may have access to your profile. If it is an app that you trust, and use often, you might consider using it. Apps that you should remove are the ones for internet quizzes and memes, which could be from suspicious sources.

Setting your Facebook privacy will only take you so far, however. Another option is to install software specifically designed to work with social media sites.

Internet Security Software

Current security software not only scans your computer’s hard drive for threats, they can also scan your Facebook and Twitter pages. The big advantage to this software is that it can detect issues that your privacy settings might miss, such as malicious web links on your Facebook wall. This way, when you share links to product sites you can scan your wall to make sure the link is safe.

By using a combination of internet security software and privacy settings, you can protect your Facebook and Twitter content from malicious attacks and prying eyes.
