“Death, taxes and childbirth! There’s never any convenient time for any of them.”
― Margaret Mitchell, Gone with the Wind

Baby on the way! Baby on the way! As the trimesters tick by, expecting mothers can feel overwhelmed. Putting together a baby registry may fall to the bottom of the thousands of things to do prior to baby’s arrival. Green insider moms know what is essential for any new mom baby registry. This list will help your friends and families know what you really need and will use. For non-essentials, check out our series Baby Essentials that Aren’t.

11 Essential New Mom Baby Registry Gifts

Organic Baby Carrier

A happy baby is a carried baby close to their mama’s heartbeat and rhythmic breathing. From backpacks to wraps, there are many different baby carriers on the market. The best carrier is one that will grow with your baby and last throughout their first year.

Worn babies are happier than stroller babies. It’s actually easier to go shopping, go for a hike, and get things done wearing your baby. An added bonus is your body will get stronger, and you will burn more calories carrying your sweet load.

Here are some popular organic baby carriers:

  •  Boba Baby Wrap
  • 360° Ergonomic Baby & Child Carrier by LILLEbaby
  • BABYBJORN Baby Carrier Miracle
  • ERGObaby Organic Baby Carrier

Organic Onesies and Socks and Other Layette Items

new mom baby registryBabies need more clothes than you realize. Diapers can leak, babies drool or spittle, there isn’t time to do laundry … All these reasons make organic baby clothing essential new mom baby registry items. In addition, layette items are affordable for any budget.

Depending on what time of year your baby was born, long sleeve or short sleeve options are necessary. Forgo the cute baby clothes for a few months except for special occasions. A onesie is needed underneath cute clothes too. I prefer the kimono style organic baby clothing, as it doesn’t require pulling over baby’s head to get on and off.

Here are some great organic baby layette items:

  • Lalago Baby Cute Organic Cotton Socks
  • L’ovedbaby Unisex-Baby Organic Cotton Footed Overall
  • Burt’s Bees Baby – Set of 5 Bee Essentials Short Sleeve Bodysuits, 100% Organic Cotton
  • Lamaze Baby Organic Essentials 4 Pack Longsleeve Bodysuits
  • Niteo Baby Organic Cotton Kimono Onesie Bodysuit Long Sleeve with Side Snaps

Boudreaux Butt Paste Diaper Cream

It is essential to have diaper cream that works on your new mom baby registry! This is something new moms actually need and will use often. It can be hard to know what to put on a baby registry, and diaper rash cream is often omitted. It’s one of the last items new moms will think of when planning for the future. Insider, experienced moms know, you’ll be reaching for the Boudreaux Butt Paste when the inevitable diaper rash erupts. It belongs on any essential baby registry checklist.

new mom baby registryBoudreaux Butt Paste starts healing on contact. It creates an instant barrier to protect chafed, tender bottoms and seal out wetness. Pediatricians recommend both formulas:  Boudreaux’s Butt Paste Original Formula with 16% zinc oxide and Boudreaux’s Butt Paste Maximum Strength Formula with 40% zinc oxide. The maximum strength product has over two times the healing power of the original and starts healing in as little as three hours. Both are available in two ounces, four ounces, and 16 ounces sizes.

This diaper cream is free of parabens, dyes, and preservatives, and talc. There is also an all Boudreaux’s Butt Paste Natural Formula, which is of course what we recommend. Boudreaux’s Butt Paste is available at Target, but we are giving it away!

Wooden Activity Gym and Toys

new mom baby registryProper toys can aid development. Babies love to experiment with their bodies, explore cause and effect, and experience gravity. Babies explore their environment orally, so wooden, natural toys are the safest option. Plastic toys contain chemicals that are dangerous. A wooden activity gym will entertain your child for hours. Wooden rattles and toys are also great fun. Here are five great wooden toys for any new mom baby registry:

  • Plan Toys Planpreschool Activity Baby Gym
  • Haba Color Fun Play Gym
  • Organic Wood Montessori Styled Baby Rattle by Homi Baby Made in the USA – Sealed with Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
  • Crinkle Toy for Babies by Homi Baby – Organic Hand-sewn Baby Paper Toy with Organic Wood Ring Sealed with Organic Coconut Oil
  • Manhattan Toy Skwish Natural Rattle and Teether Grasping Activity Toy

Eco-Friendly Feeding Tools

It’s best to plan ahead for when your baby switches to solid foods and sippy cups. Babies should be exclusively breastfed until they are 6 months old. This is also the time they are ready to drink from a sippy cup. Plastic-free feeding and drinking items are most advisable. Plastic, even if BPA-free, contains chemicals that are not safe. Here are some plastic baby feeding alternatives to add to your new mom baby registry:

  • Munchkin Miracle Stainless Steel 360 Sippy Cup
  • Premium Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Bowls For Baby Toddler Kids
  • Munchkin Snack Plus Stainless Steel Snack Catcher
  • Children Giraffe Individual Feeding Spoon
  • Avanchy Bamboo Infant Feeding Set

 Organic Baby Blankets for Swaddling

A swaddled baby is a happy baby. Wrapped tightly in a snuggly blanket, babies feel secure and womb-like. Organic baby blankets are best to use on your child. They protect babies from toxic chemicals used in clothing production. The skin is the largest organ, and a baby’s skin continues to develop during the first year. Swaddling blankets are lighter weight than quilts and other blankets, so be sure to specify on your new mom baby registry. Even if you don’t swaddle, organic baby blankets are essential and useful.

Teething Toys

Teething can begin as early as 3 months of age. This natural process is aided by chewing.  Just as there are benefits to avoiding plastic feeding tools, it’s also sensible to use plastic-free teething toys. Natural wood and organic wool or cotton products are beneficial.  They relieve the need to break the teeth through the gum and keep your baby safe from chemicals. Here are some of our favorite teething toys to add to your new mom registry:

  • Maple Teether – Single – Made in USA
  • Manhattan Toy Natural Classic Baby Beads Wood Rattle, Teether, and Clutching Toy
  • 6pc Wood Teething Rings Bunny Ear Teething Wooden Ring
  • Organic Farm Buddies, Frenchy Fox Blankie
  • Organic Farm Buddies, Frenchy Fox Teething Rattle

Diapering Needs

Perhaps one of the hardest decisions for new moms is whether to use cloth diapers or disposables or both. Whatever your choice, make sure you have plenty of them in many different sizes. As advocates of reuse, we believe cloth diapering is the best choice for the environment. From all-in-one diapers to inserts with covers, there are many options for cloth diapers now.  Add a few different kinds to your new mom registry to find out which you prefer before ordering a full supply.

Nasal Aspirator Bulb

It may seem gross, but a nasal aspirator is an essential baby item. This amazingly simple tool is efficient at clearing infant nasal passages. Of course, you hope your child will never get sick, but it will happen. There’s just no other way to clear those little noses than with a nasal bulb.

Childcare and Household Help

Every new parent needs a break! Sleep interruptions at night and exhaustion make household chores difficult. Every new mom baby registry should include the gift of help. Someone to watch your baby while you go to the grocery store, go for a walk, take a shower, etc. can be critical to your well-being. Getting a night off from making dinner, folding laundry, vacuuming while you spend cherished time with your baby is a great gift. It’s also a present that doesn’t cost a dime.

Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding is the best option for both your health and your baby’s. Granted, it is not always possible for all new mothers; however, it should be the goal.  here are a lot of breastfeeding supplies and accoutrements, but most of them are unnecessary. Some people swear by their breastfeeding bras, pillows, etc. What is essential is Lansinoh. Lanolin is the safest and most effective way to treat tender, chafed nipples.

Breast pumps are needed if you need to go back to work right away. Hand pumps are difficult to use. If you plan to use a breast pump, it’s best to invest in one that works efficiently like the Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump with On the Go Tote. Don’t forget to add breastmilk storage bags to your new mom baby registry.

I am always of the mindset to get something for the mom herself; a mini-pampering basket usually. I also normally give (and requested when I had children) packs of the next size diaper because you normally get influxed with first sizes and have too much in the end.
