Our grandmothers, or great grandmothers depending on your age, used to make their own cleaning products out of simple, safe ingredients. The shift towards chemicals in cleaning products was partially due to the lack of animal fat during World Wars used to make soap. For example, it wasn’t until the 1940s that phosphate compounds were added to create laundry detergents with synthetic surfactants.

Unfortunately, this change from homemade natural cleaning products to synthetic detergents and compounds created an unhealthy home for humans and the environment. Toxic cleaning ingredients cause a range of problems from minor skin irritations to cancer.

Starting with my favorite AspenClean product, the microfiber cloth is much larger than I expected. It is a great product for eliminating the use of disposable paper towels. I used it with the bathroom cleaner to clean my granite counter top and toilet. It was very absorbent and effective.

There are only two places I use paper towels when cleaning: the toilet and windows. AspenClean also makes a microfiber cloth designed for windows I would love to try and ditch paper towels once and for all!

AspenClean uses a color-coded system to help you remember which microfiber cloth goes with which cleaner and part of the home, so that once you remove the packaging, it’s easy to remember. Blue is for the bathroom!

The AspenClean Bathroom Cleaner has a lovely gentle smell and did not irritate my skin. It cleaned my granite vanity top effortlessly, including removing built-up Dr. Bronner’s soap drops. Infused with organic lavender and lime, this spray cleaner is 100% natural, biodegradable, and effective. It’s made in Canada, and the bottle is 100% recycled plastic except for the colorant. AspenClean is so honest in their efforts to be eco-friendly, they even disclose this minor detail many companies would ignore.

Next, I used the AspenClean Super Scrub powder to clean my copper bathroom sink and toilet bowl. This all-natural cleaning product contains organic tea tree and lavender. The scent is very mild. Just like the spray bathroom cleaner, the super scrub was very easy to use and effective. No repeated scrubbing required to get rid of hard water (no extra elbow grease!) stains and other tough jobs. The mineral and plant ingredients give comfort to eco-conscious consumers.

AspenClean makes laundry detergent in three different varieties (unscented, lavender and lemongrass, eucalyptus and rosemary), all of which contain organically-grown ingredients. They are suitable for all water temperatures and effective even in the coldest of waters, of which I only do laundry in. 100% of the total ingredients come from natural origin.

My favorite scent is definitely lavender and lemongrass. I love this combination! The scent is not overpowering, at all, like many chemical laundry detergents. It always amazes me when I pass somebody on the trail or street and can smell their laundry detergent on their clothing. That would give me a headache for sure!

I really wish they were available in my area!

When searching for an AirBnB, I look for ones that say they use eco-friendly cleaning products. I have learned from experience that I get headaches when sleeping on sheets with strong chemical fragrances and the scent of toxic cleaners. That “freshly cleaned” smell is exactly the opposite. It is a warning of poor indoor air quality and a toxic home environment.
