Which Organic Consumer Are You? Dabbler, Devoted or Reluctant?

fresh-produce.jpgThe Natural Marketing Institute just released their latest report on the state of the organic food industry…in other words…who’s going organic. It turns out more than half of us are buying organic foods at least sometimes.

But, how you are seen by companies who market organic foods depends on how much you buy.

Are you a:

1) DEVOTED (16% of shoppers) – the most committed to organic and its ideals … most likely to have changed your lifestyle to integrate organic. The more a category is used, the more it has to be organic.

2) TEMPERATE ( 22% of shoppers) – have a modern organic attitude and fit organic into your lifestyle; the more you use a category, the more an organic version becomes a treat.

3) DABBLER (44% of shoppers) – non-committal about organic – you can take it or leave it. For you, buying organic is more about hipness than the health benefits.

4) RELUCTANTS (18% of shoppers) – the least trustful of organic and believe that conventional products are just as good (if not better) than organics and that organics are not worth the extra cost.

I have to admit that I’m not as devoted as I’d like. I often can’t get past the price difference. If conventional apples are $.98/lb and organic are $3.00/lb, I will probably buy the cheap ones, especially if they are local and the organic apples are from New Zealand. However, I am trying to think of the extra expense as a donation to a cause I believe in. This mindset has helped me overcome my reluctance to spend more money.

I just found this site and will visit it often! We write about “thrifty green” issues over at http://greenbabyguide.com.

I am definitely a devoted consumer. We’ve adjusted our budgets and our lifestyle completely within the last two years and buy organic as much as possible. Granted organic can be more expensive, but with the adjustment of our budget we were able to reduce other aspects of our spending to incorporate the higher grocery prices.

I am between a temperate and devoted consumer. Trader Joe’s makes it affordable and easy for me to be organic.

I’d be devoted if my area made it easier. The only type of organic produce I can buy is apples. That’s why I’m planting a garden this year! If you can’t buy ’em, grow ’em!
