About Eco Child’s Play

We've got the whole world in our hands
Eco Child’s Play (ECP) is a blog devoted to informing and discussing “Green Parenting for Non-toxic, Healthy Homes”. ECP began in 2006 as site devoted to natural toys, but we quickly realized we needed to expand our mission to include broader issues related to green family life.

Eco Child’s Play’s ethos is to provide news, information, and opinions on natural, green parenting to help your family live a more healthy life!

Jennifer Lance-founder and editor

gse_multipart8243.jpgMy green interests were sparked as a youth, when I dreamed of being a Rainbow Warrior. I became a vegetarian at the age of sixteen and decided I wanted to live in the mountains sustainably. I’ve been living off the grid and growing my own food now for sixteen years. We have built an eco-home from salvage timber off our land, which we milled ourselves. We produce electrical power from our creek, and daily hikes are part of our family’s routine. Extending my eco-values to my children is only natural, as I try to raise world citizens with the smallest carbon footprint possible. It’s not always easy, with the commercialization of childhood, but I strongly believe my children will benefit in the long run. I am also a teacher, artist, and yogini.

Glass straws are exactly what I’m looking for. My (grown) daughter has multiple chemical senstivities, and now cannot tolerate plastic. Please tell me how to order glass straws!

Thank you so much,

Hi,

I’d like to inquire about purchasing a text link that says something like “RC Helicopters” on ecochildsplay.com somewhere on your homepage for our site http://www.xenonproject.com. We sell Remote Control Toys (RC Toys) and I thought we might be a good fit for your readers/visitors. Our budget is around $50/yr. Is this something you’d be open to?

Hi. I was disappointed to come across the write-up you posted on our PackIt Personal Cooler. I am one of the founders and we pride ourselves on our earth-safe and eco-friendliness. Our eco-gel is non-toxic and made up of 95% water. The rest is an eco-friendly solution that has been tested. Your child could eat it and be completely safe unlike the blue gel packs that are often bought. We say please to not place sharp objects into the bag because as with any bag it can produce a hole if really sharp. If one of our gel packs were to puncture (which never has), I can say, with full confidence that children and/or adults would not be harmed in any way. Thanks for listening.

Hi,

I am an independent distributor for a company called Vollara, whose mission is to support an idea of uncompromising health. We accomplish this by cleaning up the environment we live in by producing products that pollute less, purify the air in the home (purify, not filter), providing better water to drink, and with world class supplements for inner health.

The products that would have the greatest impact on children is the air purification products to greatly reduce the spread of disease carrying germs through items they touch in the home, and the laundry product that reduces the need to use ANY detergent while washing clothes in COLD water. This is extremely important to prevent the rash many people, young or old, get from many detergents but more importantly, it reduces the amount of chemicals and surfactants that are drained out of the washer. Americans start over 1100 wash loads every second of every day(Wall Street Journal, January 25, 2010, titled “The Great American Soap Overdose” ).

To learn more, contact me at: paul@ecohealthandhome.com or visit my Vollara website at: http://www.ecohealthandhome.com and click on the “Environmental Purity” link on the bottom right of the page.

Sincerely,

I write from Spain (excuse-me if my english is not so good).

I write after to see a TV report about vaccines and autism. So, perhaps idea I explain now is stupid, but I think that there is a problem about the protocol system to put the vaccines tou US childs and babys, if I understand well:

I listen that in USA you put a lot of vaccines to the babys in the same day. I listen ¿until 22? or ¿usually 6?.
If this is truth I would explain that in Spain we put maximum 3 vaccines in one day ( to attack 5 maladies).

We put the differents vaccines or the differents parts of the same vaccine (difteria + tetanus + tosferina) in 3 differents time. With minimun 2 month between them.

So, if I listen OK, I think that the childs with higher sensibility to vaccines (or his formulation components/parts), can have a bad effect/reaction to them, inside of the body, because it can be an “stress” or bad integration in the body this quantity of viruses or bacteria + vaccines components at the same day. They are so young, and so fragile.

Its only and observation, that you probably have done yet, and so, without importance.

Thank you for your time,

I was wondering if you have disabled trackbacks? I would love to write a trackback post to your post from June 19, 2009 regarding the change in Canadian policy regarding breech births. But I can’t find a trackback URL anywhere.

I’m a midwife from Sydney, Australia (where very very few obstetricians will allow vaginal breech births) and I would love to share your blog with my readers!

Thanks

Dear Jennifer,

I live in Ireland and I am not sure how great we are with recycling and keeping the Emerald Ireland green but for sure many people do their best. Our local green school is a brilliant school and the staff are doing their best to provide colorful education but funding is scarce, so for example if we want our children to be taught music, it is necessary raise funds. We will have a cake sale on Easter Sunday to raise funds for the School Development Fund and as part of that I will be selling a children’s book I wrote and illustrated. I am donating 50%of the profits to the school.

The book is teaching children how to use the plastic and other packaging that is already out there (unfortunately) and instead of merely binning it, UPCYCLE it into something useful. The book is called The Upcycling Adventures of Zack and Dot: Rockets and it has full instructions on how to turn a plastic bottle into a toy rocket. In the book children learn, first of all, that plastic and cardboard has to go to the recycle bin. But that is not the only thing to do with recyclables! We can reuse them or UPCYCLE into something else and thus reduce the amount of waste.

I am a fan of the work of Mr Michael Reynolds from New Mexico who is using what people refer to as “rubbish” to build houses (old tires, bottles etc.) and creates sustainable eco systems in homes. I hope my book series will inspire future generations to keep the planet clean and green using all methods and inventing new better ones!

I would like to introduce the book to the children whose parents visit your website. Children who make their own rockets following the instructions on our website and send the photos to our email can win a book.

The book is self published to cut the costs and to make that 50% that goes to the school significant. The website has othe projects to do with children as well as games and activities. Please do not dismiss it merely on the grounds of it being self-published, have a look at the illustrations yourself.

You can contact me via email zackanddot@gmail.com

I’d appreciate any feedback if I may ask for a bit of your time.

Thank you kindly for your time

I am pleased to introduce to you a young company called Bum Boosa Bamboo Products. Since their “grass-roots” launch just two years ago, families across the USA and Canada have been raving about their inspired mission and earth-friendly product line.

Behind this brand are two determined and passionate mothers who have made it their goal to help consumers stop and consider the impact of their common disposable product purchases. They offer a unique and earth-friendly, bamboo alternative that has the potential to influence the landscape of a profligate disposable and cosmetics industry that persists in using plastic to manufacture wet wipes, clear cuts millions of trees to create toilet paper, and continues to use harsh preservatives and synthetic fragrance in cosmetic products.

Their family friendly product line includes their first and also award winning product: baby wipes derived from soft and renewable bamboo fibers with plant based ingredients, the first tree free bathroom tissue made from 100% bamboo pulp, and an herbal diaper rash ointment that includes 100% natural and effective herbs, essential oils, bamboo powder and zinc oxide.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, would like to do a feature on the company, or to request a sample of the products.

Sincerely,
Bobby Pellant

What is the incidence of autism in ‘non-developed’ parts of the world. It seems that autism had surfaced about the time plastics became widespread in America, and I wonder if developing countries with fewer plastic bottles, etc. have a lower rate.

I found this site when I googled “bleach baths”. I think that your post about bleach baths is poorly researched and should be retracted. I think that environmental and health conscious people who could be helped by bleach baths may feel overwhelming guilt or fear because of your emotional language and poor understanding of chemistry, biology, math and health. If you do not possess enough knowledge on these subject to report with accuracy, you shouldn’t report on them at all. It is irresponsible to give health and medical advice if you don’t know what you are talking about.

As a result of being circumcised at birth, I had a myth about uncircumcision since
I was 6 years old. Ten years ago, I got on one of those NOCIRC websites and saw a
list of the features lost due to circumcision. I had thought they left out something
on that list, so I e-mailed them to inform them they had forgotten something.
I told them they had neglected to mention the bulge like feature located toward
the rear (base) of the penis. Someone with the group replied that they didn’t know
what I was refering to. I explained to them again, this time in more detail. Later,
someone replied to me,” I’ve never been circumcised, and I still have no idea what
you are talking about.” Then He asked,” How do you know what all is normally
there if being circumcised is all you’ve known?” I e-mailed back,” I’ve seen it on
male dogs since I was a kid… You know?…It’s that bulge a couple of inches behind
the head that swells into a knot during an errection so a man can lock into his
woman. Your group left that one off of the list.” Needless to say, the folks had to
take some “time out” to explain to me that is not a part of human anatomy, and
never was. They told me,” You may have not had a way of knowing it untill now,
but that feature is found only on K-9 animals.” I was 47 years old at the time of
this conversation. When I was a kid, I never asked my mother about that because
my dad had a strict rule against talking about sex related matters. I had assumed
that if a male human baby is circumcised, that bulge will not develope. All the boys
I went to school with were circumcised and some of them also thought that bulge
should have been there. Some even thought we male humans have that bone in
the penis that carnivore animals have. Biologists and zoologists call that a baculum.
Another train of thought that had me convinced of the bulge myth was when I heard
of stories of men getting caught cheating with another man’s wife. Some men will
imeadiatly spring out of an open window and run away. And some men caught in
the act will still lay with the woman and try to explain things to the angry husband.
I had thought those were the uncircumcised men who were still locked into the
other man’s wife and can not pull free to run away.
What the nocirc group explained to me came with mixed emotion. I was relieved to
know that was not another thing I lost to circumcision. But after so many years of
thinking what I thought, I am to this day really dissapointed that we human men
and boys do not have that knot like bulge that male dogs, wolves, foxes and
cyotes all have.

I have recently published a green themed children’s book entitled “I Leave You this World” indie style found on Smashwords.com https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/146019. The Ebook format was the greenest way I could find to publish this work. It is my hope as authour and illustrator of this book that it will inspire Mommies everywhere to be a bit greener. I am a firm believer that when we know better, we do better. Through this mother child bonding book Mother’s of the western hemisphere can learn to embrace the ways to do good by their children and the world they will inherit. Please check it out!

I would like to know more about how much sea weed one would take as a prevention of many cancers . I have been researching this and I am getting different amounts ranging from 300-900 milligrams up to 1,000mg. Also when should this be eaten one hour before a meal? Or does it not matter.

Hello,

Looking for some stuff on internet(actually looking for detergents)I came across this site. I’ve noticed lot of comments concerning detergents’ ingredients.
I receive newsletters from “EWG” Environmental Working Group, which seems to be a very decent organization. Take a look and see for yourself.

Hi,

I have to say that I agree with some of the sentiments in your original post/review. It is not possible to change hearts and minds with regards to global warming by scaring children and depriving then of all hope.

Maybe this is why my book “Global Warming for Young Minds” has been very popular with teachers as well as mums and dads.

The book wraps the explanation of global warming, climate change and sustainable living is a positive message of shared responsibility, a common message for children and adults alike.
(Please visit my web-site http://www.globalwarmingforyoungminds.com)

I even had a global warming sceptic write to me. He had read the book to his kids because I did not, as he put it, push the “global warming agenda – we are all going to suffer down his throat” – but simply presented the facts in a neutral manner.
