smartshield eco-friendly sunscreen and natural bug repellentIt’s official, I got my first sunburn this weekend. It was only a light burn, but somehow I always forget the sunscreen during the first warm days of spring. Fortunately, I remembered to protect my children with SmartShield when we headed down to the river. One added bonus to this “serious sun protection” is it contains natural cedar bug repellent, which kept the “eye bugs” from swarming their faces.

SmartShield is an “eco-friendly” sunscreen and bug repellent combination, but it does not appear to be all natural, as there are some ingredients I do not recognize. I researched several of these ingredients on Skin Deep, as Smartshied itself has not been rated, and I discovered they contained a low to moderate hazard. The Environmental Working Group has done an extensive study on sunscreens and found that:

Our comprehensive scientific review indicates that 85% of 1,015 sunscreen products offer inadequate protection from the sun, or contain ingredients with significant safety concerns. Only 15% of the products on the market are both safe and effective, blocking both UVA and UVB radiation, remaining stable in sunlight, and containing few if any ingredients with significant known or suspected health hazards. Unilever, makers of Dove, has recently released a video aimed at promoting children’s self-esteem by illuminating how the beauty industry targets girl’s body images. The goal of the Dove Self Esteem Fund is to change “the current, narrow definition of beauty.”  As much as I agree with this goal, there is a downside. Unilever imports palm oil from Indonesia, where rainforests and tropical peatlands are destroyed.  [read the full article...]

lipstick-girl_hm.jpgMore bad news about lead: It is in 61% of name brand lipsticks! The $50 billion cosmetic industry largely regulates itself, and the FDA has not set a limit on  lead levels in lipstick. Thank goodness we have the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Environmental Working Group to keep us informed.According to Enviroblog: [read the full article...]

Natural, Gentle Bath Bubbles?

by Jennifer Lance on October 25, 2007 · 0 comments

When my daughter was two, I thought bubble baths would be fun. I read every label in the health food store searching for the safest, natural bubble option. I was alarmed to find that a majority of the labels had warnings about prolonged exposure and girl’s urinary tract systems. I was also concerned, because a friend of mine swore her daughter developed eczema from a commercial character bubble bath. I was lucky to find Clearly Natural Happy Kidz Bath Bubbles.

Since Erin first alerted me to SLS in a comment on my previous baby soap recommendation, I’ve been exploring the beauty products my family uses. I’ve been surprised how many “natural” beauty products are not natural! You can read more about my discoveries at Green Options: Green Myth-Busting: “Natural” Beauty Products.

Natural Soap For Your Baby and Child

by Jennifer Lance on May 14, 2007 · 5 comments

If you are making the switch to a greener life for your children, a good place to begin (besides growing and buying organic food) is with beauty products. Baby and children’s skin is very sensitive and can often erupt in rashes from commercial products designed for them. My son’s skin is especially sensitive, and thankfully, he was born into a family that had already discovered the best natural beauty products. Our family has tried many natural baby soaps, including bar soaps, and have found the best value and product to be Healthy Times Honeysuckle Baby Bath. At only $2.58 a bottle, this liquid soap is affordable and gentle. My son, who developed a horrible rash from Johnson’s Baby Soap in the hospital after surgery, has never had even the slightest reaction to Healthy Times Honeysuckle Baby Bath. We use Healthy Times Honeysuckle Baby Bath on both of our children as shampoo and body soap. Liquid soap lasts longer in the bathtub and is easy to travel with, as well. Healthy Times also makes shampoo, conditioner, and sweet violet lotion. Healthy Times makes natural beauty products affordable for every family.
