Corn Bag Critters: A Natural Alternative to Electric Heating Pads

cornbag critters natural heat padWhen your child has aches and pains, heat or cold applications offer wonderful, natural therapy.

In my experience as a parent, my children often resist ice or heat unless it it is disguised as a loving toy.  Cornbag Critters are lovable toys that can be heated in a microwave as a natural alternative to electric heating pads.  Made from 100% fluffy cotton chenille, handmade Cornbag Critters can help soothe earaches, growing pains, muscle/joint pains, backaches, and/or cramps.

What is a Corn bag critter you ask?  A corn bag is a natural, earth-friendly alternative to the electric heating pad. Corn bags are used to help soothe and relieve the pain from earaches, toothaches, backaches, cramps, growing pains, muscle and joint pain, neck and shoulder   tension, knee pain, sinus pressure and many other common ailments.   The inside of the bag is filled with whole kernel deer corn and is heated in the microwave for 1-2 minutes.  Since the corn is cracked, it does not pop. Once you remove the bag from the microwave you replace the cover.  This will hold heat for several hours.  In addition to the healing properties, corn bag critters are wonderful to snuggle up to on a cold winter night.

I live off-the-grid, thus I do not have a microwave. Actually, my power supply is not the issue, but I have made a choice not to have this extra appliance, as I don’t entirely trust the technology (I’ve been told many times I am foolish for my fear of microwaves).  Alternatively, my family can use their Cornbag Critter as a cold pack for the accidents that inevitably occur with children.  Simply place the corn bag (not the cover) in a ziploc bag and pop in the freezer to use when needed.

These are wonderful to have in the home! I’ve got 2 shaped like giant band aids and they get used a LOT. Not only for boo boos and sickies, but we use them as bedwarmers on chilly nights too – they keep feet nice and toasty warm.

Very similar, but we’ve always used rice bags in my family. My grandmother made them for everyone. They do hold the heat for a long time. They aren’t cute, but my kids seem okay with that.

I don’t have a microwave either, so a heating pad alternative would be appreciated. Is a hot water bottle the way to go?

Rachel, that’s what I have always done, but I am wondering if there is another method for heating the cornbag critter.
