Sustainable Fashion: Organic Nursing Camisole

Although I had no need for nursing bras or camisoles, I have friends (and readers) who swear by them.  As with anything, organic is best, especially when you consider the fabric will be in constant contact with your breast where your little one will suckle.  You don’t want any toxins rubbing off!

Leading Lady is a popular brand for bras. They offer an organic nursing line.  We were sent the Organic Nursing Cami to try:

  • 100% Certified Organic from soil to finished product!
  • Natural coloring – no dyes or bleaches
  • Looks great under clothes or on its own
  • Inner sling for added support
  • Quick one-handed clasp for easy nursing
  • Adjustable straps for a perfect fit
  • Length of approximately 15-1/2″ to 16-1/2″ at side seam

I am no longer breastfeeding, so I can’t truly “try” this out, but as with all organic cotton, it is very soft and lovely.  I think the outer tag is a bit misleading, as it reads “Made with 100% certified organic cotton”.  The cami does contain a small amount of spandex for stretch.  Yes, all the cotton is certified organic, but the tag would make me think the cami itself was 100% organic.  Not exactly greenwashing and a little nit picky on my part, but it is something that confused me at first.

I did notice that in their non-organic line, they make a Leading Lady Molded Underwire Nursing Bra.

Underwire bras should NOT be worn while breastfeeding, as they can cause plugged milk ducts.

This concerns me that the brand makes such a product, as many women do not know how unhealthy underwire bras are.

It pleases me to see more and more lines offering organic products.  At $38, this product is not too overpriced considering its sustainably grown contents and the benefit to mother and child.

UPDATE:  I sent this nursing cami to a breastfeeding friend to actually try.  Here are her comments:

“The bralet is super soft but does the weirdest thing to your nipples with their under sling. Not super impressed with it.”

disclosure: The products described above were sent to us as free samples. Prior assurances as to the nature of the reviews, whether positive or negative, were not given. No financial payments were accepted in exchange for the reviews. The reviews reflect our honest, authentic opinions.
