Is Your Teen Getting Ready To Drive? Here Are 5 Things Parents Can Do To Prepare

Is Your Teen Getting Ready To Drive

Is Your Teen Getting Ready To Drive? Here Are 5 Things Parents Can Do To Prepare

Having a child is one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. However, that child will grow up to become a teenager who will want to learn how to drive. Whether your teen uses your car to learn how to drive or another car, it can be a nerve wrecking transition. What can you do to prepare for the time when your teen starts driving?

Enroll Your Teen In Defensive Driving Classes
It is important that teens learn the right way to drive a car. Due to their lack of experience, it is easy for a teen to be an aggressive driver or not know how to handle certain situations on the road. Learning from a professional is the best way for a teen to get comfortable behind the wheel.

Shop Around For Car Insurance
Your teen driver is going to need car insurance. It will be cheaper if your teen is part of your policy as opposed to going on their own policy, but you’ll want to make sure that your auto insurance company has a young driver’s auto insurance program. Therefore, the time is now to start looking at how adding a teenager to your policy will impact your overall premium.

Decide What Car He Or She Will Use
Now is a good time to determine which car your teen is going to drive. For example, you could decide to give your teenager one of your old cars or buy a used car for your kid. Another option is to ask your young driver to buy his or her own car to drive if he or she wants to go out frequently.

Set Rules For When And Where Your Teen Can Drive
Drivers under the age of 18 may have limits set upon them by the state as to when and where they can drive. In addition to those rules, you should set limits as a parent as to when and where your child can drive. Most parents allow their kids to drive to school and work only. In some states, your child may not be able to have passengers in the car while he or she drives. If your state does allow passengers, it may be a good idea as a parent to take that option away at first as passengers can be distracting.

Be A Good Example For Your Teen Driver
It is critical that you provide a good example for your teen driver. When you are driving with your teenager, make sure that you are obeying the speed limit, checking mirrors and taking other steps to ensure that you are following the law. This will come in handy when your teen decides that it is time to take the road test. During a road test, the instructor is going to be quite particular about following the rules of the road.

Many teenagers want to get their license as soon as they are old enough to do so. While it is understandable that your teen would be excited to get behind the wheel, you need to make sure that your child is ready to drive. Furthermore, you need to make sure that you are ready for your teenager to share the road with yourself and other drivers on a regular basis.
