How CBD Treatment Eases Anxiety in Dogs

cbd for dogs

Dogs experience anxiety for a variety of reasons. Separation anxiety is the most common reason canine pets are anxious. Cesar’s Way, the online resource of the “Dog Whisperer” Cesar Milan, there is two types of separation anxiety in dogs: Simulated and true separation anxiety. One is learned behavior where a dog gets attention for bad behavior, and the other is actual nervousness and apprehension. Fortunately, CBD for dogs can help with both kinds.

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil does not contain psychoactive THC. It offers a safe, natural alternative to pet anxiety drugs like Xanax. CBD for dogs with anxiety works via the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and its specific reactors CB1 and CB2. According to the peer-reviewed Journal of Psychopharmacology, “…both for anxiety and fear memory processing, endocannabinoid signalling [sic] may ensure an appropriate reaction to stressful events. Therefore, the ECS can be considered as a regulatory buffer system for emotional responses.”

Just like medical marijuana helps humans, cannabidiol supplementation activates and balances CB1 and CB2 receptors easing tension, fear, and anxiety in pets. Veterinarians are studying the positive effects on dogs. Dr. Jamie Peyton of the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is leading the way in a first of its kind study. According to the Sacramento Bee,

So far, the school has collected responses from 1,300 animal owners who are using cannabis – usually non-psychoactive oils – to treat dogs and other small animals for pain, anxiety and nausea, among other things.

“This is very similar to medical cannabis usage for humans,” she said.

Many vets are recommending CBD for pet owners. The oil is easy to administer either directly into the dog’s mouth or on a treat. Testimonials and experience of pet lovers repeatedly state how effective CBD oil is at relieving dog separation anxiety. It’s also beneficial for other types of anxiety, for instance, caused by loud noises, travel, and visits to the vet.
