Children’s Literature: Mary Poppins

Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 2.34.00 PM

As a child, I grew up watching the movie [amazon_link id=”B00E9ZATKI” target=”_blank” ]Mary Poppins[/amazon_link].  I catch myself singing, “Just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down” as I take my herbal tinctures.  Classics like Mary Poppins are part of our collective culture and experience.

Even though the movie hold space in my memory, I have never read the book. In fact, I didn’t realize there was actually more than one Mary Poppins book.

We were sent the[amazon_link id=”0544340477″ target=”_blank” ] 80th Anniversary Collection Mary Poppins[/amazon_link]:

Since the 1934 publication of Mary Poppins, stories of this magical nanny have delighted children and adults the world over. In honor of the book’s 80th anniversary comes this lush collection that includes the first four tales by P. L. Travers, illustrated by Mary Shepard: Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens the Door, and Mary Poppins in the Park. Featuring a gilded cover, a foreword by Gregory Maguire, and an essay by P. L. Travers about the writing of Mary Poppins, this handsome volume will make a lovely gift for fans new and old. Travel on the east wind to Cherry Tree Lane with Mary in these stories that inspired the classic film, the stage show, and young imaginations the world over.

The publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s corporate and social responsibility report describes what they are doing to make the world a better place.  Two key areas for those of us concerned about the environment and our children’s health are:

Sustainability
Our 2014 Paper Procurement and Usage Policy, deemed industry-leading by the Rainforest Action Network, outlines HMH’s commitment to responsible and reduced environmental impact, including specific goals to achieve by 2018.

Green Apple Initiative
Together with the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), HMH is working to provide more than two million children with access to safer, healthier, and better learning environments.

I can’t wait to read this collection aloud to my son!
