Too Many Sweets? How to Naturally Cure an Upset Stomach

upset stomach

The holiday season is filled with sweet goodness. From Santa’s gluten-free cookies to candy cane treats, it’s sometimes difficult to know when to put the brakes on the sweet tooth, especially for children. Fortunately, there are many remedies to naturally cure or alleviate the symptoms of an upset stomach from a sugar hangover.

Naturally Cure an Upset Stomach

Drink Water Infused with Ginger

Ginger has anti-inflammatory, carminative, intestinal spasmolytic, and antiemetic properties and has long been used to ease stomach discomfort. The active compounds in ginger are suspected to block serotonin receptors causing nausea, as well as prompt the body to release digestive enzymes.[1]https://recipes.howstuffworks.com/food-facts/ginger-settle-upset-stomach.htm You can chew on a piece of raw ginger. You can make ginger tea by adding hot water to the grated root. You can also drink ginger ale, but it is best to avoid soda containing high fructose corn syrup and other additives.

Take Activated Charcoal

Digestive enzymes and activated charcoal can help ease stomach discomfort. Both work best when used at the first sign of digestive issues. Activated charcoal is a binder and used to treat poison ingestion. It’s important to stay hydrated when using this natural remedy.

Drink Water

Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. When we eat too much sugar, the body responds with rising glucose levels. This triggers the pancreas release insulin, and the liver responds by absorbing glucose. [2]http://www.diabetesforecast.org/2012/feb/the-liver-s-role-how-it-processes-fats-and-carbs.html Increased glucose in the blood as another effect. It causes osmotic diuresis increasing your need to urinate, thus you need to increase your water intake to avoid dehydration.[3]https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/001266.htm[4]https://iquitsugar.com/sugar-hangover-cures/

Rice Tea

Rice tea is another effective remedy for treating an upset stomach. It is especially effective at stopping diarrhea. To make, boil 1/2 cup of organic rice (any variety) in six cups of water. After 15 minutes, strain the tea and drink warm.[5]https://www.rd.com/health/conditions/9-natural-upset-stomach-remedies/

Eating too much sugar will inevitably cause an upset stomach. It is our body’s reminder of our excess so that hopefully we will not repeat the sweet binge in the future. These natural home remedies will help ease the symptoms of consuming too many sweets.
